Day 1: (D) Travel to Boston's Logan Airport on your own and transfer to your hotel. (Rountrip air is additional). Welcome to New England! Depending upon your arrival time, you will have some free time to visit Quincy Marketplace and have lunch on your own. Located in the heart of downtown Boston, the Marketplace is adjacent to historic Faneuil Hall and is part of Boston's "Freedom Trail” with historic sites and the nearby waterfront. There are many shops, restaurants and fun street entertainers in the pedestrian-only area.
Next we meet our local guide near Quincy Market for an afternoon tour of Boston highlights. The "beantown" city is a blend of historic buildings and contemporary skyscrapers, narrow winding streets and broad avenues, Victorian townhouses and tight-knit ethnic neighborhoods. Your ride along the Freedom Trail will take you to a number of world famous sites, including photo stop at the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides), the US Navy's oldest commissioned ship. A walk through the North End will introduce you to one of Boston's oldest and most historic neighborhoods, where you'll see the Paul Revere House and the Old North Church where lanterns were hung to signal Paul Revere. The Old State House, Kings Chapel, Old Granary Burial Ground, site of the Boston Massacre, and Beacon Hill will all be highlighted as your guide relates the history, folklore and current events of Boston. Check in to the Hilton Boston Back Bay for a one night stay.
Our welcome dinner reception tonight is in a fashionable Italian restaurant in Boston's Back Bay area.
Day 2: (B, L, D) After an included buffet breakfast we depart for the New Hampshire lake district for a guided cruise aboard a canopied pontoon boat as she cruises the beautiful lake featured in the movie "On Golden Pond.” Observe the local wildlife including loons and bald eagles as your local guide shares stories of the natural forces that created these lakes.
Next we'll enjoy a different type of cruise on New Hampshire's largest lake, Lake Winnipesaukee on board a replica steamship. You'll travel one way from Weirs Beach to Wolfeboro on this narrated cruise. A bountiful buffet lunch is included on board. Wolfeboro is America's First Resort Town where we will have a bit of free time before we visit the Castle in the Clouds with its sweeping views of the lake. Enjoy an overview program followed by free time to explore the castle grounds and two-story mansion at your own pace. Later we travel to North Conway, NH and check into the White Mountain Resort, located at the foot of Baldface Cliff. Our two night stay will allow us time to enjoy walking trails and gorgeous scenic mountain views. Our Welcome reception will be followed with dinner at leisure in the hotel dining room.
Day 3: (B, D) Enjoy breakfast at your leisure followed by some free time in nearby North Conway village. Later we depart for a full day guided tour of the White Mountains. The tour will loop through the Mt. Washington Valley; see the Jackson Covered Bridge, cross over the scenic Kancamagus Highway which twists and turns through the White Mountain National Forest. Lunch is on you own in a charming mountain village. This afternoon we travel through Crawfort Notch and through Franconia Notch State Park with its dramatic overlooks. Later enjoy a special maple sugaring tour at the Rocks Estate. Tonight, it's All Aboard the dinner train in Lincoln, NH. Relive the romance of dining on the rails on the Café Lafayette Dinner Train in their beautifully restored vintage Pullman rail cars. Enjoy a leisurely evening ride through the lush New England forest and the magnificent mountain
vistas. Afterward we return to our hotel.
Day 4: (B, D) After an included breakfast, we make our way from the mountains to the sea! First we visit Pineland Farms, a private, organic farm and dairy located in the rolling hills of New Gloucester. Here we'll take a guided tour of the unique dairy, horse, and poultry barns and see cheese being made in their creamery. Have lunch on your own here before we continue our journey to the Maine coast. The first person you will meet is the "Maine Lobster Lady” who will have a souvenir Maine lobster hat for you. After crossing the causeway onto Mt. Desert Island, will check into the four star Blue Nose Inn located high on the ridge overlooking the bay. After our welcome reception we will enjoy an old fashioned Lobster feast at Bar Harbor.
Day 5: (B, D) We begin our day with a full buffet breakfast in the private Rose Garden Room, then it's off for a morning tour of Acadia National Park, including a one hour carriage ride along the famous Rockefeller carriage roads. You'll see 9 mountaintops, stone bridges, lakes, ponds, and trails. The park loop will include Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole with its crashing waves, Sieur de Monts Springs, and the Wild Gardens of Acadia. Learn about the rich and famous visitors who build summer "cottages” in Bar Harbor. Lunch is on your own today in Bar Harbor Village with its many shops and restaurants. Later there's time to tour the Abbe Museum, Maine's most extensive Native American heritage museum. This evening we taste some of the finest in traditional Down-East cooking and view the spectacular panorama of Frenchman's Bay from our glassed-walled dining room. Following dinner, you're in for a treat – the
unique Great Maine Lumberjack Show! See the "Olympics of the Forest” re-enacted as the lumberjacks and loggers compete – chopping wood, sawing, tree climbing, ax throwing and everyone's favorite – log rolling. The competition includes history, comedy and audience participation.
Day 6: (B) After breakfast we depart Bar Harbor making our way south along the coast. Have your camera ready for a photo stop atop Mt. Battie within the beautiful Camden Hills State Park, where you'll see sweeping views of Penobscot Bay and the surrounding islands. Next we explore Freeport village, home of sporting goods king, L.L. Bean and numerous outlet shops and restaurants. After some shopping time we will see how the Maine lighthouse keepers lived on a private tour of Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. The two story lighthouse is furnished as it was when lighthouse keepers lived on site.
Next we travel to Kennebunkport for check-in at the Nonantum Resort, your home for two nights on the riverfront in Kennebunkport – just down the avenue from Walker's Point. Guest rooms are located in the main inn with its waterfront dining room and old-fashioned porch with rocking chairs, outdoor pool and gardens. Enjoy dinner in the hotel dining room at your leisure.
Day 7: (B, D) Following breakfast we meet our local guide for a narrated tour of Kennebunkport. Our dive will take us past the sandy beaches and rocky coastline, and the George Bush estate at Walker's Point. Hear the history of these shipbuilding towns and the legend of the Wedding Cake House. We'll also visit the seaside Franciscan Monastery with its beautiful landscaping, outdoor shrines and chapel. Next it's free time for shopping and lunch on own in Dock Square with many quaint boutiques and casual restaurants. After lunch we experience our Maine Lobstering cruise. Learn how the Maine lobstermen make their living as traps are hauled from the ocean along the rocky coast of Kennebunkport. See the sights as you cruise on the ocean past Walkers Point, the Dark Shadows House and Bumpkin Island, home to a year round colony of sea birds and seals. As we depart for dinner with a drive through Perkins Cove, in Ogunquit – which means "beautiful place by the sea,” we view the unique draw bridge and a host of bobbing lobster boats returning with today's catch. You'll also stop at Maine's southernmost lighthouse, the picturesque Nubble Lighthouse near York Beach. And finally we enjoy a classic downeast lobsterbake dinner with sing-a-long entertainment. At Foster's, you'll feast on your choice of Maine boiled lobster or barbecued chicken, plus chowder, cultivated mussels or steamed clams, corn on the cob, Maine potatoes and blueberry cake.
Day 8: (B) This morning we depart Kennebunkport for the Logan Airport to board your flight home, taking many warm memories of New England.
